Football brings together young people from around the world
During the month of August 2011, the city of Madrid witnessed and hosted World Youth Day, a massive party that brought together young people from all corners of the world to be beside Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to the capital of Spain.
At ZERTIOR’s initiative — and entirely under its management and organisation — the Bishop’s Conference and the Atlético de Madrid Foundation teamed up for a memorable “finale” to The World Youth Day … a sporting event at the Vicente Calderon stadium.
The “Thank you!” football match pitted a team of Spanish legends with football stars from the rest of the world. These included players like Paolo Futre, Fran, Emilio Butragueño, George Finidi, Rubén de la Red, “Donato”, Santi Denia and Luis Milla. They played under the watchful eye of the Archbishop of Madrid at the time, Antonio M. Rouco Varela, and the President of Atlético de Madrid, Enrique Cerezo, in the boxes.
It was an unforgettable event that created long-lasting impressions for all those who attended.
